In 2011 B&D was retained by Amherst College to perform planning and implementation services for the Pratt Field facilities enhancement project. This project would include a new football field and lights, track, pedestrian plaza, stadium seating, press box, and fieldhouse. The first phase of the assignment consisted of a conceptual study and program of architectural requirements. We initiated this process by conducting a campus tour and multiple interviews both in formalized groups and casual intercepts. Utilizing our proprietary demand-based programming tools, a utilization analysis was performed to identify required square footage and a needs and condition gap analysis. A program was developed outlining efficiency models and functional relationships. Balancing mission with the key variables of cost, schedule, and quality, we developed a project schedule and development budget. This step entailed an analysis of risk tolerance to determine the optimal delivery method. Throughout this process, we conducted several sessions with key stakeholders and staff to ensure that there was shared authorship in every planning decision. Final documentation aligned all recommendations with strategic objectives. Following this process, we coordinated the engagement of the design and construction team as well as direct owner consultants. Next, we assumed a role of program manager, which included project communications and record keeping, project schedule tracking and management, project budget tracking, and management, scope and quality management, construction oversight, quality control, risk management, commissioning and occupancy, and project close-out. The $20.1 million enhancement project was completed in 2013.
