In 1996 Somerset County, New Jersey was asked to respond to the initiative of a local entrepreneur who sought to acquire an independent league baseball franchise and locate it in the county. B&D was hired by the county to complete a feasibility study for the proposed ballpark and recommend lease terms that would be reasonable for the county. Our scope of work included: an analysis of the ballpark’s concept relative to county economic goals; a market analysis; a financial analysis; and an economic impact analysis. This effort was particularly challenging since there was no operating history for the Atlantic League and the county was concerned about its long-term viability. Our analysis provided the county with sufficient confidence to enter into negotiations with the league and the franchise owners. Based on our study, the project was approved and the Somerset Patriots completed their first season in the 6,100-seat, $18 million Somerset Ballpark in 1999.
