By 2006 DC Prep’s vision included developing a second campus to serve 360 students in pre-school through 3rd grade. It envisioned that the new school would offer a rigorous and stimulating curriculum that emphasized literacy and communication skills along with social and emotional development. B&D was contracted to serve as the school’s owner’s representative and in this role we were responsible for managing the planning, design, and renovation of a vacant warehouse in the same area as the school's current middle school facility. We conducted a feasibility study of the new building and managed the budget and schedule for the project. Further tasks included: selection of architects, construction management, geotechnical services, and permit expediting. In addition, we managed design reviews, regularly engaged user group input, monitored commitments and expenditures, and participated in construction meetings and final punch-list activities. The new 46,000 SF, $4 million school opened in 2007 and includes classrooms, a computer lab, a cafeteria, a multipurpose room, and an administrative office suite for the home office staff.
In April 2010, we were asked to assist with implementing the development of a playground over an at-grade parking lot on the school site. Our responsibilities included:
• Coordinating and tracking the project budget
• Drafting the preliminary layout
• Researching options for playground surfacing
• Evaluating delivery methods
• Coordinating and tracking the project schedule
• Selecting professional team member
• Coordinating technical support for a permit expeditor
The new playground was completed in 2011.
