In 2005 the Maine Community College System selected B&D to help lead a $22 million design-build effort to provide 600 new beds for three of its community college campuses. The System faced many challenges: each college was quasi-independent; the architecture of each college was different; and each needed a different solution to protect it from Maine’s harsh winters. Our work included: negotiations with architects, design management, design development and construction document reviews, and financial plan management. We also explored various financing options and provided the System with a bond-issuance package that mitigated project and financing risk for all concerned. As a result, new housing at two of the colleges opened in 2007, and at the third college in 2008 with occupancy at 100% and 93%, respectively.
