Cleveland State begins rethinking its campus

In a June 2, 2026 article published by Crain’s Cleveland Business, B&D Vice President Ryan Jensen and B&D Director Laura Day Kane were quoted extensively on Cleveland State University’s decision to hire Brailsford & Dunlavey to conduct a comprehensive review of its 85-acre campus. Jensen discussed B&D’s approach to helping universities right-size their physical footprints, prioritize investments, build stakeholder alignment and position campuses for long-term success, while Kane emphasized the urgency of the effort, noting that there is a cost to standing still and that now is the time for bold decision-making.

The article outlines how B&D will help Cleveland State evaluate every part of its campus, from major facilities like the Wolstein Center to broader opportunities for redevelopment, partnerships, improved building utilization and long-term campus optimization. Jensen explained that the process is designed to identify priorities without preconceived solutions, while Kane underscored that the work will remain centered on the student experience, incorporating student input to help shape the university’s future.

"The leadership and information from B&D, and the clarity with which they provide it, brings added credibility to the process and ensures that a range of university stakeholders, including senior leadership and our board, are fully informed for – and confident in – their required decision making.”
