How the University of Pittsburgh elevated recreation as a strategic campus asset
What happens when recreation becomes part of a university’s enrollment strategy?
For years, campus recreation has been viewed as an amenity. At the University of Pittsburgh, it became something more: a strategic investment in the student experience.
As colleges and universities compete to attract and retain students, campus leaders are looking beyond the classroom to shape environments where students can thrive. At Pitt, that meant rethinking the role recreation, wellness, and student life could play in supporting student success and strengthening campus connections.
The result is the University’s new Recreation and Wellness Center, a facility designed to improve accessibility, strengthen connectivity across campus, and create a central destination for fitness, wellness, and community.
But the project is about more than a new building.
The Recreation and Wellness Center reflects a broader institutional commitment to creating a student-centered campus experience. By investing in spaces that encourage wellbeing, engagement, and connection, the university is positioning recreation as a meaningful contributor to the overall student journey.
The facility also supports several larger initiatives shaping the future of Pitt’s Oakland campus, including long-term planning efforts related to housing, athletics, and campus development. Together, these projects represent a coordinated vision for a more connected campus where learning and development extend well beyond the classroom.
To help guide that vision, the university partnered with B&D to develop a comprehensive Recreation and Student Life Plan. The process assessed demand, evaluated existing conditions, and identified opportunities to strengthen recreation and wellness offerings in support of the institution’s long-term goals.
For recreation leaders, Pitt’s approach offers a compelling example of what can happen when recreation is viewed not simply as a campus amenity, but as essential student success infrastructure.
